Ep. 9 Meet Taddy Digest: The HVAC Technician Turning Experience Into Education

HVAC Technician and Expert Taddy Digest
HVAC technician and business owner Tad “Taddy Digest” Fuller shares his journey from working in his family business to teaching thousands online. Learn how he’s inspiring future HVAC pros through YouTube and hands-on training.

Meet Tad “Taddy Digest” Fuller

you’ve ever searched YouTube for HVAC troubleshooting or solar air conditioning, chances are you’ve stumbled across Taddy Digest. With more than 1,600 videos and over 100,000 subscribers, Tad Fuller, better known as Taddy, has become a go-to voice for HVAC technicians looking to learn, grow, or get inspired.

But long before the camera started rolling, Tad was working long hours in the field, learning the trade from the ground up.

Growing Up in HVAC

Tad’s HVAC story started early, really early. His father founded a heating and cooling company in the 1980s, and by the time Tad was old enough to hold a tool, he was spending summers doing sheet metal work with the crew.

“Every summer I was with my dad’s team, working from 5 or 6 a.m.,” Tad recalls. “After high school, I went straight to trade school so I could keep learning HVAC while working for him.”

After finishing his program, Tad became the company’s only technician. He handled service calls, built customer relationships, and earned a dollar raise each year, starting from just $5 an hour. Ten years and thousands of service calls later, he knew the trade inside and out.

Turning HVAC Lessons Into Online Learning

So how did an HVAC technician become a full-time content creator?

Tad credits his friend John Willis, a gear maker and YouTuber, with sparking the idea. “John asked me one question that changed everything,” Tad says. “‘How are your kids going to see you when you die?’ That hit me. I wanted them to see me doing something meaningful.”

That conversation led Tad to film his first video and then over 300 videos in his first year alone. What started as a personal project turned into a full-blown mission to help others grow in the trade.

Advice for New HVAC Technicians

For anyone thinking about becoming an HVAC technician, Tad has simple but powerful advice: focus on learning, not earning.

“Don’t expect to get paid what you want right away,” he says. “If you find a good environment and a company that’s willing to teach you, that’s worth more than a few extra dollars an hour.”

He also emphasizes the importance of curiosity and fear. “Fear is good,” Tad explains. “It drives you to find answers. When you care about your customers and your reputation, you’ll keep learning until you get it right.”

The Taddy Digest HVAC Training Course

Tad’s drive to help others led to the creation of the Taddy Digest HVAC Training Course, an online membership designed for every level of technician, from beginners to business owners.

For just $25 a month, members can access in-depth videos on topics like:

  • Airflow and duct sizing
  • Charging heat pumps correctly
  • Sales training and pricing equipment
  • How to get more customers during the slow season

He also offers higher membership tiers for one-on-one consultations or even in-person, hands-on training. “I’ve trained people from all over the country,” Tad says. “They come to Tennessee, stay nearby, and work with me for a few days to really learn the business.”

For Business Owners: Keeping the Phone Ringing

When HVAC business owners hit slow seasons, Tad suggests creativity and generosity go a long way.

“Call your local radio station and run an ad,” he says. “Ask three questions: Is your air cold? Is your electric bill high? Are your lights dimming? Then offer free estimates. People remember how you make them feel and when you take care of them, they’ll call you back.”

It’s that same mindset, give value first, that built Tad’s reputation both online and in the field.

What’s Next for Taddy Digest?

Even with more than a thousand videos and thousands of technicians helped, Tad isn’t slowing down. He continues to post multiple videos a week, from HVAC troubleshooting to business-building advice.

His mission is simple: to inspire HVAC technicians to take pride in their craft and never stop learning.

“I’ve been where they are,” Tad says. “If I can help one person find their path in HVAC, that’s what it’s all about.”
