Your website isn’t just a digital business card. It’s your best sales rep.
In Part 2 of our conversation with CJ Kortes of Outlaunch Marketing on Home Service Headquarters, CJ breaks down exactly how home services business marketing is changing — from the way SEO works today to how AI search is reshaping who gets found, and what your website needs to do once a visitor lands on it.
Your Website Is a Sales Rep, Not a Brochure
Most home services businesses think about marketing as going outward — pushing ads, running campaigns, getting in front of people. But once you’ve done that, your website has to close the deal.
CJ puts it plainly: The website that shows up before your technician knocks on the door needs to represent your business just as well as that tech does in person. It should:
- Build trust before any contact is made
- Communicate your value clearly and specifically
- Guide visitors to take an action — calling, requesting service, or learning more
Think of it less like a page on the internet and more like a sales presentation that’s running 24/7.
The Three Phases Every Visitor Goes Through
CJ references a Google framework on mobile website conversion that outlines how potential customers actually behave online. There are three phases every visitor goes through:
- Exploring: They’re browsing multiple companies, not yet committed to anyone.
- Evaluating: They’ve narrowed it down and are comparing a few options.
- Acting: They’re ready to call, click, or book.
Most websites are only built for the third phase. They slap a “Request Service” button on the page and assume visitors are already ready to buy. But for larger, non-urgent purchases — like a new HVAC unit — visitors spend most of their time in the exploring and evaluating phases.
The fix? Build content that speaks to all three phases. Give the person who’s just browsing something valuable — like a guide, a checklist, or answers to common questions. If you’re the only one giving them useful information while your competitors are just asking for the sale, you’ve already won a big part of the trust battle.
How SEO Has Changed (And Why It Matters for Home Services Business Marketing)
Old-school SEO was all about keywords. Businesses would build separate pages for “roofer,” “roofing company,” and “roofing contractor” — or worse, buy thousands of fake backlinks overnight. Those tactics worked once. They don’t anymore.
Google has gotten smart enough to understand that a “roofer” and a “roofing contractor” mean the same thing. It’s also personalized now — two people standing next to each other, searching the same term on the same street, can get different results based on their individual history and preferences.
What matters today:
- Relevant, well-organized content built around clear service pillars
- Pages designed for users, not just search engines
- Links from reputable, related sources
- Technical backend work like schema markup and proper site structure
The businesses winning in home services aren’t gaming the algorithm. They’re writing genuinely helpful content and making sure the technical foundation supports it.
AI Search Is the Next Frontier — And It’s Already Here
AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are changing how people find businesses. Instead of clicking through 10 blue links, users now get answers directly — and those answers often include specific recommendations.
That changes everything about how you write content. CJ explains that rather than writing for a keyword, you now need to think about the sequence of questions a customer asks — and build content that answers all of them. It’s less about keywords and more about being the most helpful, trustworthy source available.
Outlaunch has rebranded their service entirely around this shift. They no longer call it SEO — they call it AI Search Visibility, because SEO and AI optimization are no longer separate things. A strong SEO foundation is required to show up in AI results, and the two feed each other.
The warning CJ gives: Contractors who are just now figuring out SEO will be talking about AI five years from now like it’s something new. The businesses that start building their AI visibility today will have a serious edge.
Hit or Miss: Marketing Takes for Home Services Businesses
The episode wraps up with CJ weighing in on three common marketing beliefs.
Social media is a requirement for services businesses — HIT, with conditions.
If you can post consistently with real, behind-the-scenes content — actual jobs, real customers, genuine personality — social media is worth it. If you’re paying an agency to churn out generic graphics, you’re wasting money. And if you’re running paid social ads, make sure you know what you’re doing (or hire someone who does). Social proof — testimonials and completed work — tends to outperform clever creative.
Home services don’t need more leads — they need to do more with the ones they have — HIT, but it depends.
Many businesses are losing leads they already have: missed calls, receptionists turning away customers in areas they actually serve, slow follow-up. But some businesses genuinely do just need more volume. The key is knowing which problem you actually have before throwing money at either.
Word of mouth is the single best marketing tool for home services businesses — FOUNDATION, not a strategy.
Word of mouth is proof your service delivery is strong — it’s the foundation everything else is built on. But it’s not predictable or scalable. If you want aggressive growth, you need more than referrals. Marketing amplifies word of mouth; it doesn’t replace it.
CJ’s One Piece of Advice for Every Service Business Owner
When asked for a single piece of advice, CJ didn’t go straight to marketing. He went broader: surround yourself with people who are more successful than you.
After 20 years in business, his biggest takeaway is that trying to figure everything out alone slows you down. Finding mentors, joining peer networks, and learning from people who’ve already made the mistakes you’re about to make are what accelerate growth faster than any marketing tactic.
